A South Indian Sizzle

Welcome to Madras Masala. If this is your first time here, we hope you enjoy our mixture of South Indian flavors and Indo-Chinese specialty dishes. If you are returning to Madras Masala we hope that you think of this as your restaurant, your home away from home.

At Madras Masala, we have gathered the aristocracy of South Indian Cooks on the American continent. Each is a Master Chef and, more importantly, a good and faithful person. Unlike most Indian restaurants, our chefs take the time to blend, mix, roast and grind our own special mixtures of spices. We feel that by taking such care and by feeding people there is the opportunity to experience a great blessing, both for our owners, cooks, staff and hopefully, for our customers.

It is with the deepest sincerity that we welcome you to Madras Masala, and we hope that we will become an important part of your lives, as you become part of our great and extended family. We welcome all people here, and hope that the commonality of eating together plants some small seeds of understanding between alt peoples, races and religions.

We pray that, in the great gift of food artfully prepared, that we can offer an opportunity for people to enjoy the sight of other families from other faiths enjoying the extraordinary human joy of dining in the middle of a busy day, or in the hours of the evening when family, home, food and recreation provide the opportunity for us to reflect on what is important and on the many blessings we have been given.

So, welcome to Madras Masala. We open our doors to discover the vast array of dishes. We are glad to have you here as part of our family.

Madras Masala

About South Indian and Madras

Masala is a culinary term used all over India to refer to spice, a blend of Spices or a method of cooking. Madras, or Chennai, is a city on the Bay of Bengal and is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu on the eastern coast of Southern India. The predominant language is Tamil, which differs greatly from Hindi in that it is Dravidian in origin and is not an Indo-European language.

Southern India is marked by its closeness to the equator, the hot tropical sun, the growth of dense forests mingled with cultivated land, and the presence of coconut, palm, and many varieties of banana along with a dense garden of beautiful flowers and beautiful people.

The food of Madras and South India differs from the food of the North in both the selection of the spices, the presence of special lentils or dals, soups, dishes like dosa and uttapam, and in the incorporation of a small amount of coconut flavor in many dishes, as well as in methods of cooking. Some of our dishes are mild and cooling, others add a bit of "A South Indian Sizzle" to alert the palate to the fire that transforms both foods and hopefully, the human heart.

If you have questions about how our foods are prepared, ask our informed staff. Each one is chosen for their great expertise and experience and they are always ready to answer questions. Nandri.

"Thank you!" from The Owners, Chefs, Staff and Special Friends of Madras Masala.
